Viagra or Not?

I am often asked if there is an alternative to Viagra for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED).  Because Viagra was the first treatment for ED it is still the best-known oral treatment for ED. It caused a mini-sensation when released in the mid 1990s- helped that it was promoted by US politicians and some sporting stars (such as Brazilian soccer hero, Pele). It was then (and still is) easy to take, had few side effects for those who were prescribed it, and worked for the majority of men, allowing them (with physical stimulation) to create and maintain erections that allow satisfying sexual activity including penetrative sex.

It is estimated that half of all men in the UK between 40 and 70 years old will experience at least one episode of ED. Many will find it occurs more and more regularly as they get older. The active ingredient in Viagra is called sildenafil . Without getting too medical it works by allowing blood to flow into the penis when sexual stimulation occurs, and keeps it there for the duration of the sexual activity. Take one of the blue diamond-shaped pills one hour before sexual activity and will then work its magic for up to 5 or 6 hours.

While many men find that Viagra is perfect for them, there are alternatives such as Cialis and Levitra. They work in a similar fashion to Viagra, but there are some differences. All men are different and some find that one drug is better for them in terms of reaction and lack of side effects than another. It’s best to have a chat with your GP about the differences, and see what he or she recommends.

There are other alternatives to oral ED treatments. One is a vacuum pump. It may not be that romantic, but it works very well for many men who for one reason or another cannot be prescribed an oral ED treatment (perhaps because it may be dangerous for them due to their medical condition).  Alternatives include a prosthetic penile implant which gives a permanent solution to erectile dysfunction without having to regularly take drugs.

Some people consider that ED is all in the mind and that all you need is sexual counselling, exercise, and a healthy lifestyle. These may well help, but at the end of the day ED is most commonly a physical condition, and one that can be treated by taking a pill a short while before sexual activity. For many millions of men, Viagra has done the business!

Tips and Tricks for Having Sex after Starting an ED Medication

Erectile dysfunction is a relatively common condition that affects men of all ages and may be caused by poor blood flow, medications, or alcohol, among other things. It can be treated with lifestyle changes or medication. If your doctor prescribed medication for your ED, you may be hesitant to try having sex because you aren’t quite certain what to expect with the medication. These tips can work for a variety of medications taken for ED.

It will not work instantly.

First, it’s important to know that your medication will not give you an erection instantly, and it generally won’t be effective if you’re not aroused. You need to be sexually aroused in order to see the physical results.

Don’t rush. You have plenty of time.

Also, the medication likely has a pretty large window of effectiveness, so don’t feel the need to rush. Cialis works for about 36 hours, and also can be taken as a daily dose so you’re ready whenever. Viagra can be effective for up to 4 hours, which is still plenty of time.

Your diet may play a role.

Watch what you eat to ensure that your body can effectively absorb the medication. Fatty foods, particularly entire high-fat meals, can decrease your body’s ability to absorb certain medications. Poor eating is also just bad for your sexual health and health in general and should be avoided.

Keep trying.

Don’t give up if you’re not successful at maintaining an erection the first few times you attempt sexual activity. For some men, it can be difficult to become sexually active even with the help of medication. There are many reasons for this, some which may be emotional obstacles that you may need to work through with your partner, or seek professional help from a sex therapist. If you don’t think that’s an issue, talk to your doctor about adjusting your dose, or perhaps trying a different medication.

Most ED medications are available by prescription only. Be sure to talk to your doctor if you are having trouble getting or maintaining an erection, since it can affect your personal life and happiness and may be a symptom of an underlying condition. You should only ever use one medication for ED at a time, as using more than one will not be any more effective, and may be very dangerous.

Erectile Dysfunction and Levitra

It may seem as though drugs like Viagra and Levitra have been around for ever and that the simple and easy solution to most men’s Erectile Dysfunction problems was always with us. But no. There was a time when Erectile Dysfunction was extremely difficult to treat. If it was thought that the problem was physical, then implants or other unsavoury invasive remedies were the only solution. Failing those, you just suffered in silence. Many people preferred to suffer in silence. If it was thought that the problem was mainly due to psychological reasons then you may have been recommended a sex counsellor, or marriage guidance specialist. Was there was something in your libido or relationship that was causing you problems obtaining and maintaining an erection? It could be suggested that perhaps you didn’t find your wife or partner attractive anymore? Perhaps you are worried about something? Stressed out? While these factors could certainly cause temporary problems in achieving and maintaining an erection for sexual intercourse, it was not appreciated that there was a simple physical factor that was causing ED in most cases. And that it could be treated.

The breakthrough occurred while trials for another ailment were being conducted. In the space of a few years, after thorough testing, the first oral ED treatment came on to the market as Viagra. This was followed by Cialis and Levitra. For many men, out of the three main drugs, Levitra is the first choice. This despite the fact that Viagra is such a household name and for years held market dominance. But if you are experiencing ED, then discuss with your GP, or online with a qualified clinician, the pros and cons of being prescribed Levitra. There is now no need to worry about your performance in the bedroom because in the majority of cases, taking Levitra will solve the issue and allow you to have great worry-free sex again. Just as concern about being unable to “perform” during sexual activity accentuates the problem of temporary impotence or ED, then using Levitra has the opposite effect, boosting your confidence so that you end up with a double whammy: Fun good sex without hang-ups with your partner.

Vardenafil hydrochloride is the active ingredient in Levitra. It is an oral medication- tablets- which must be prescribed by a doctor- but consultations can be arranged online. Take no more than one in a 24 hour period shortly before you have planned sexual activity. Levitra acts as an inhibitor to the PDE-5 enzymes which block the blood flow into Penis. When the blood flow into Penis is opened up and unhindered, the erection remains for a longer period and allows for a longer and more satisfying sex. That’s because Levitra helps increase the blood flow to the penis and helps you maintain an erection satisfactory for sexual activity. It’s not just a flash in the pan either. Levitra can remain active for more than four hours after taking it. Many men report that having taken it the night before and engaged in sex, upon re-engaging in sexual activity the next day, the effect is still there.

Levitra benefits from having fewer reported side effects as compared to Viagra and lasts about the same time as Viagra in the body-4 hours, sometimes longer. The side effects, if they occur at all, are similar to all ED oral treatments, the most common being a slight headache and facial flushing. More serious side effects can be experienced with Levitra and all ED treatments, and that is why it is important to be prescribed the drug by a qualified clinician, and discuss with them any side effects you may experience.

So if you experience ED, you shouldn’t feel ashamed or embarrassed. Go to see your doctor and ask about Levitra. If he or she agrees it is right for you, then buy it from your local pharmacy or online (it can be cheaper online). Within a few days you’ll be wondering why you hesitated as you and your partner enjoy each other in the bedroom. ED? No thank you! Levitra? Yes please!

Levitra gets to work very quickly. Taken with water, you can begin to experience its benefits just a quarter of an hour after taking it with water- even if you have it with or after a meal.

The bad old days of suffering in silence are gone forever, thanks to Levitra.

Sildenafil – Successful Side Effect

What started out as research for a medication to help with heart problems like angina soon became a drug the world was clamoring for as a cure to erectile dysfunction.  The little blue pill that most know as Viagra, whose generic name is sildenafil, was an accidental discovery for erectile dysfunction or ED.

The Original Intent

While testing the drug on heart patients during a clinical trial, researchers discovered one of the side effects of the drug was inducing erections.  The drug was originally being studied for its effects on hypertension and angina pectoris, which is a symptom of ischemic heart disease.   Though researchers in the phase I and phase II trials found it had little effect on angina, it was then decided they would test it for treating ED.

A Treatment for ED

Pfizer, the company that created the compound for sildenafil, tested it for erectile dysfunction and decided to manufacture the drug for the treatment of ED.  They got the medication patented in 1996 and then in 1998, the United States Federal Food and Drug Administration approved the drug to be used as an ED treatment.  It was offered for sale later that same year.

A Successful Introduction

When sildenafil aka Viagra, was offered for sale in the last half of 1998, no one from Pfizer could have foreseen the success it would have.  The sales of the drug skyrocketed as it began to be marketed for treating ED and men began to request in hopes of helping their lagging sex lives.  Over 15 years later, the sales for Viagra continue to be steady at over a $1 billion per year.

The Typical Patient

Erectile dysfunction has many causes, though aging is one of the causes.  The drug is often marketed to men over the age of 50 to help them maintain their level of sexual performance as they age and many older men, even into their 80′s, have been able to perform better with its help.  However, ED can be caused by many other health factors.

Men who are diabetic often suffer from ED because diabetes can damage nerves and arteries that make it possible to achieve an erection.  Diabetic men have are two times likely to have ED because of their disease.  Other medical conditions that cause ED are vascular disease, kidney disease, prostate cancer and those with neurological problems.

Mental Health Issues

Men who suffer from depression may also have ED and can be helped with sidenafil.  Depression can be a symptom of the cause of a spouse, low self-esteem, unhappiness or embarrassment about their physical appearance.  ED in extreme cases of depression, however, may not be successfully treated with Viagra and the patient will need to consult a mental health professional to further treat their condition.

Recreational Use of Viagra

Since the introduction of Viagra, sildenafil has also been used by young men recreationally to help them sustain an erection longer for sexual activity.  However, many young adults have been lead to believe that the medication can increase penis size, help with sexual performance and increases sexual desire.  While studies of the recreational uses of sildenafil are limited, studies have shown a 25 mg dose had little effect in erectile quality for those in the study group, though it did reduce recovery time after ejaculation.

The recreational use of Viagra is higher among those who use illegal drugs recreational as well.  Sidenafil has shown to counteract the effects of some drugs, often illegal drugs.  Users of methylenedioxymethamphetamine, better known as ecstasy or X, as well as other stimulant and opiate users, use the drug to counter erectile dysfunction when they are on the illegal substances.  It is called “sextasy” or “trail mix”.

Copycat Medications

Due to the success of sildenafil citrate, Viagra, other companies have come up with their own versions of the drug.  Tadalafil is sold under the brand name Cialis and vardenafil is sold as Levitra.  All of these drugs treat ED and they can thank sildenafil’s side effect in clinical trials to the billions of dollars in profits they have made for the manufacturers.

Other Useful Purposes

Sidenafil is also sold under the brand name Revatio.  Revatio is sold as a treatment for pulmonary arterial hypertension, PAH.  This is a rare disorder and sidenafil helps treat it by relaxing the walls of the arterial wall and decreases pulmonary arterial resistance and pressure.  In order for the drugs not to be confused, sildenafil has been  marketed under the name Viagra and is a blue pill and Revatio is a small white round pill in a 20 mg dosage.

Further uses for sildenafil are discovered all over the world.  In Argentina, they are studying it as a treatment for jet lag and in Israel and Australia, the drug many have agricultural applications.

Dysfunctional Erections: An overview of Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction or ED is a medical condition in which a man cannot sustain or achieve an erection. Some of the symptoms of ED include erections that are not strong enough for intercourse, erections that last only for a brief moment, and of course, not being able to achieve an erection at all. This can be an embarrassing medical condition for men but it is actually fairly common; millions of men suffer from ED. A man can begin to experience ED as early as 40 years old. The condition becomes more and more common as a man ages. If left untreated, ED makes sexual intercourse basically impossible. Contrary to what people may think, a man experiencing ED often has a healthy libido and sexual appetite. The problem has to do more with a dysfunction on the physical level. Here is what happens: the brain and genital nerves send signals. The penis receives these signals and allows blood to flow inside it. When blood fills the penis, an erection occurs. If the penis cannot receive these signals then an erection will not occur. This results in ED.

A man who suffers from chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, kidney disease and multiple sclerosis has a much greater chance of experiencing ED because these diseases often hinder blood flow and nerve signals throughout the body. Also, the way that a man lives his life can factor into him experiencing ED. A man who is overweight and who does not exercise regularly has a higher risk of suffering from ED. As well, smokers, alcoholics and substance abusers often experience ED because their unhealthy habits damage their blood vessels. Damaged blood vessels have a hard time sending blood to the penis, thus resulting in ED. Damaged blood vessels can also result from surgery and treatment for certain types of diseases such as cancer. Depending on the type of surgery, the damage may be temporary or permanent. If the damage is permanent then a man will have to receive surgical treatment in order to achieve and sustain an erection.

If the problem is just a matter of blood flow, a man experiencing ED has a variety of treatment options available outside of surgery. He may consider medications like Viagra and Cialis. These drugs increase blood flow to the penis when a man is aroused. Vacuum devices, also known as more commonly as penis pumps, are another option. A man can use a vacuum device on his penis to increase blood flow, thus achieving an erection. To maintain his erection, he fastens a band around his penis. He can also take a more active and alternative treatment option by adjusting his lifestyle. He can exercise more and give up drugs and alcohol. Exercise will increase blood flow and the absence of drugs and alcohol will promote more blood flow. All in all, ED has a variety of causes as well as a variety of treatment options. If you are experiencing symptoms of ED, it is best to consult with a doctor or physician to properly diagnose and treat ED.

Different Treatments for Erectile Dysfunction

If you are struggling with erectile dysfunction, you may want to know how you can obtain treatment for your issue, or what sorts of treatments a doctor may prescribe. There are several treatments for erectile dysfunction. Chances are, you are a prime candidate for at least one, if not more, no matter your medical history or budget. Here, we will look at three types of treatment for erectile dysfunction, as well as to go over what each treatment entails. Ask your doctor about these possible treatments for your sexual issue, today:

Non-Surgical Treatments

Non-surgical treatments are, most often, the route that men take to treat their erectile dysfunction. Such treatments are how the medical community refers to pills (known as phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors or PDE-5), injections, or suppositories that help many patients to treat erectile dysfunction. Such brand names for these pills may include Cialis, Levitra, and Viagra. Most often, patients are advised to take these pills before they have any type of sexual encounter, or engage in any type of sexual activity. Somewhere around 80% of men find improvement with this method once they begin to use it. Ask your doctor for more information about non-surgical treatments today.

Surgical Treatments

Surgical treatments for erectile dysfunction most often include the insertion of a penis implant. These implants may be non-inflatable or inflatable. They can bot help to reduce issues with erectile dysfunction. However, inflatable implants may also help to make the girth of the penis larger, as well. Surgical treatments may be more expensive, have more side-effects, and be more painful than non-surgical treatments. Ask your doctor, today, if you think you may be a candidate for surgical treatment of erectile dysfunction. For some patients, this may be the only safe treatment due to their medical history.

Alternative Medicine

There are also options for alternative medicine with erectile dysfunction. These may include visits to your acupuncturist, or the addition of dietary supplements to your diet. Such dietary supplements include Panax ginseng (Korean read ginseng), the addition of the hormone dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), or the addition of L-arginine. Remember, however, to talk to your doctor before adding any kind of dietary supplement to your diet. Some herbal remedies may tout themselves as the “herbal Viagra,” but know that these drugs may now be approved by the FDA because they could have harmful interactions with other drugs, and all ingredients are not listed on the labels.
